Sesame Workshop has added divorce to its series of online tool kits, which include topics such as starting school and dealing with financial difficulties, according to an article in the Chicago Tribune. The tool kits are part of the educational organization’s "Little Children, Big Challenges" initiative, and offer hints and tips for parents guiding their young children through difficult matters.
Children who are faced with divorce may have questions that are difficult to voice or the parent may not know how to answer them. "We really try, in these resources, to say, 'It's OK that these questions come up and it's really important to help your child know they're not alone,'" says Jeanette Betancourt, senior vice president at Sesame Workshop.
The online tool kit includes, for example, an online storybook about a boy who lives from time to time with his mother and other times with his father; instructions for caregivers, hints for parents on helping their children to talk about the divorce; and songs that make it easier for kids to express and recognize their feelings.
Sesame Street has avoided the topic of divorce, and only one scene existed in which Snuffleupagus was faced with his parents’ divorce. However, the network decided not to air it after poor response from test audiences. "Children who weren't experiencing a divorce suddenly started having questions about it,” says Betancourt. The tool kit, on the other hand, is a targeted program for families specifically coping with divorce.
