Tips for Safely Sharing the Road with Large Vehicles

Posted on September 15, 2017 in Personal Injury

Illinois truck accident lawyerWhen you drive, you have to share the road with a wide variety of other vehicles, ranging in size from bicycles and motorcycles all the way up to large trucks and buses. Accidents involving these large vehicles can be especially dangerous, and even if cars have top of the line safety features, the sheer size and weight of trucks and buses can cause major injuries to drivers and passengers. In fact, even though trucks and buses make up only 4.6% of the vehicles on the road in the United States, they are involved in 11.9% of fatal crashes.

In order to increase safety on the road, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (a division of the U.S. Department of Transportation), AAA, the American Bus Association, and the American Trucking Association have joined together to create a safety awareness campaign called Our Roads, Our Safety. This campaign seeks to educate drivers about how to share the road safely with large trucks and buses.

Tips for Safety Around Large Vehicles

The campaign offers a number of tips for how drivers can stay safe around trucks and buses, including:

  • Stay out of blind spots - Truck drivers have difficulty seeing other vehicles directly in front or behind them, and they also have blind spots to their sides. Drivers should avoid these blind spots and be careful when merging around trucks.
  • Be careful when passing - Be sure to signal clearly when passing large vehicles, and make sure you can see a truck or bus in your rearview mirror before pulling in front of it.
  • Watch for wide turns - Trucks have a much larger turning radius than cars, so it is important to give them plenty of room when they are making a turn. Watch for turn signals and never try to squeeze past trucks or buses when they are turning.
  • Follow proper roadway safety - Always wear a seat belt, avoid distractions while driving, and never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Following these safety measures can mean the difference between life and death in crashes with trucks or buses.
