The Emotional and Physical Toll of Divorce

Posted on December 00, 0000 in Family Law

Throughout everyone’s romantic life, there are sad moments when important people leave.  While the stress can leave you feeling lonely, angry, mad and other emotions, it can also have an effect on your wellbeing.  During a divorce, the stakes are even higher because it is a family that is changing not just a relationship.

A divorce can result in heightened stress levels, especially if the process takes a long time.  The body releases cortisol in times of anxiety as a way to deal with the fight or flight response.  Over a long amount of time, the cortisol can create negatively affect blood pressure, heart rate and other healthy levels in the body.

This can also lead to trouble sleeping through the night.  It is difficult to sleep while stress causes your mind to race and being tired can make you stressed.  Missing your partner in bed can really cement the feelings of loneliness and make it harder to relax.  As stress levels increase and sleep decreases, it can eventually lead to depression.  Along with depression, anxiety can present itself.  If you are experiencing any symptoms of depression, it is important to reach out for help.

When people are depressed, it can result in weight gain.  Some people seek solace in food, and it is always the food that is high in fat, sugar, or salt.  Other times, it is a result of cortisol levels in the body which can cause people to gain weight, the stress can cause retention of fatty deposits.  Being overweight can contribute or cause high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease.

Going through a divorce can be a cause for introspection.  Rather than focusing on the pain that you are feeling, it is important to reinvest in your health and well-being.  Take the time to exercise or at least relax your mind during your divorce.  Another way to lower your stress levels is to have the assistance of a legal professional.  Contact a skilled family law attorney in Hinsdale today who has guided others through a divorce and can work to keep the process as easy as possible.
