Tips for Driving Safely with a Baby

Illinois injury lawyerAlthough you should always drive safely, doing so is particularly crucial if you have a baby in your vehicle. To reduce your risk of a car accident and keep yourself and your baby safe and sound while you are on the road, we have put together this list of five tips for driving safely with a baby.

  1. Perform Regular Vehicle Inspections

Prior to the start of every season, you should perform a thorough inspection of your vehicle. During this inspection, check tire condition, brake performance, light functionality, fluid leaks, and seat belt functionality. Regular inspections can create a safer ride for you and your baby.

  1. Purchase the Appropriate Car Seat

There are a wide variety of car seats on the market today, making it imperative for you to choose the right one. When shopping for a car seat, you should make sure that it is appropriate for the size of your baby. In addition, you should check out its safety ratings and test it out in your car to ensure it fits properly.

3. Make Sure the Car Seat Is Rear-Facing

Once you have found the appropriate car seat, you should seat your baby in it in a rear-face position until they reach the maximum weight or height for the car seat. Keep in mind that when your car seat is rear-facing, its shoulder straps should be at or a bit below your baby’s shoulders

4. Refrain from Bringing Food and Toys on The Road

While it is tempting to bring food and toys in your vehicle so that your baby can stay fed and entertained on the road, doing so can do more harm than good. Your baby can easily choke on your food or injure themselves with a toy while you are behind the wheel.

5. Always Focus on the Road

Rather than turning around to peek at your baby, you should always focus on the road. If your baby starts to cry, remain calm and continue to keep your eyes on the road and hands on the steering wheel. In the event you are concerned by your baby’s crying, you can pull over.
