As a woman under the age of 45, are you more likely to be killed by a stranger in a dark alley or by someone you know? According to a recent Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) study, 55 percent of killings in women under 45 were intimate partner violence-related. The CDC defines this as killings that occurred at the hands of a current or former partner or the partner’s family or friends. In the vast majority of these cases (93 percent), the assailant was an intimate partner or an ex. Perhaps surprisingly, strangers committed 16 percent of all female homicides in this group.
