Looking into a city’s cost of living is a normal thing to do when considering where to live. From housing to grocery items, we want to find the best place to live at a reasonable cost. But have you ever looked at a city in terms of cost of divorce? According to Huffington Post, the top nine cities in the United States are rated first by how much an hour it costs to retain an attorney and then other details that make it a city you should probably think twice about divorcing in.
At number nine, Dallas has a going rate of $291/hour but filing fees in of themselves are so high that the Supreme Court looked into finding ways for people to just get divorced without filing!
WIth the longest divorce process of up to three years, Philadelphia came in eighth with $297/hour. For just three dollars more, San Diego has such high fees that about 80% of people go without a lawyer and represent themselves in their own divorce!
As quick as it is to get married in Las Vegas, it is known as being just as quick of a process to get divorced AND to be a resident for only six weeks to get a divorce at a rate of $309/hour. Paying a filing fee of $409 is one of the highest in the U.S. and gets Miami rated number 5 with a $332/hour rate. San Francisco is a close number 4 at $339/hour.
Jokingly, New York’s divorce rate of 7% is claimed to be due to their high attorney fees of $342/hour that people cannot afford to get divorced there! It is also the last in the country to approve no fault divorces, but not without a six month cooling off period. Having old divorce laws, Newark’s $343/hour, makes a long 18 month divorce timeframe.
Lastly, Los Angeles at $350/hour doesn’t include the $400 filing fee, 50/50 community property law (unless there was a signed prenuptial) and expensive trials ranging from $40k to 150k! Los Angeles definitely does not make it easy to divorce!
If you're located in or around Chicago, Illinois, make sure you have a knowledgeable divorce attorney in DuPage County who can make sure the process is quick and efficient. Contact a DuPage County lawyer today!
