Summer Road Trip Safety Tips

Posted on June 15, 2018 in Personal Injury

Illinois injury lawyerThe summer is the ideal time for individuals, families, and friends to take a road trip. If you are planning a road trip across the state or country, there are certain steps you should take to keep yourself and other motorists safe. Here are six summer road trip safety trips we recommend:

1. Get Plenty of Rest

Going on a road trip can be exhausting. After all, driving for long hours and stopping to enjoy attractions is not particularly relaxing. Therefore, you should get plenty of rest. When you are driving, take regular breaks and make sure you get at least eight hours of sleep each night. If your schedule is too busy, you could drive drowsy and cause an accident.

2. Share the Driving

If possible, refrain from driving during your entire road trip. Ask other drivers to split up driving duties with you so you can take a break from your time behind the wheel. You will find that even a half hour or hour break from driving can help you rejuvenate.

3. Avoid Distractions

It can be particularly difficult to stay focused on driving if you are on a long road trip. However, avoiding distractions such as eating, drinking, grooming, or texting while you are in the driver’s seat is essential. Your risk of causing a crash will significantly decrease if you keep your eyes on the road and hands on the wheel at all times.

4. Resist the Temptation to Speed

When driving a long distance, resisting the temptation to speed can be a challenge. To ensure you are following driving laws and giving yourself enough time to react to changing road condition, make every effort to avoid speeding.

5. Buckle Up

Seatbelts really do save lives. By simply buckling up and encouraging your passengers to do so, you can lower the chances of serious injuries and even fatalities.

6. Pack a First Aid Kit

An emergency may arise at any moment when you are on the road. By packing a first aid kit, you can be well prepared in the event an emergency does strike. A first aid kit should include scissors, tweezers, gauze pads, bandages, adhesive tape, alcohol prep pads, and pain medication.
