DuPage County personal injury attorneysMany of today’s headlines regarding road safety focus on distracted or impaired drivers. While such concerns are valid and very dangerous, there are other issues to consider as well. For example, could the vehicle you are driving pose a risk to your safety? Mechanical or design defects in cars across America cause horrific injuries and death to innocent people. If you are preparing to hit the road to visit friends or family this holiday season, you should be sure that your vehicle is in optimal condition to make the journey.

Reporting Agency

The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) was established to ensure vehicles on our roads are safe and comply with federal standards. If these standards are compromised, the agency has checks and balances in place for consumers. Since the agency was created, more than 400 million vehicles have been recalled to correct safety defects, along with tens of millions of tires, motor-vehicle components, and child safety seats.

defective products, DuPage County personal injury attorneyBy now you have probably heard about—or been personally involved in—the massive recall of cars and light trucks related to dangerous and potentially deadly airbag inflators. Every few weeks, it seems, another few thousand makes and models are added to the already staggering number of recalled vehicles. Most recently, Toyota announced the recall of 330,000 more cars, addressing concerns over passenger-side airbags. Even the head of the federal agency overseeing the recall has been directly affected, according to reports. But now, there seems to be quite a delay in fixing the problem, as replacement parts are not readily available, thanks to the sheer volume of vehicles needing attention.

NHTSA Chief’s Car Recalled

The Associated Press reported this week that one of Mark Rosekind’s family cars is currently among the more than 24 million that have been recalled in the United States for faulty airbag inflators. Rosekind is the head of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the nation’s primary agency for car, truck, and roadway safety regulation. Rosekind declined to identify the make and model of his recalled vehicle, stating only that it is one primarily driven by his wife. He, like millions of other American owners, is now being forced to wait for replacement parts, as suppliers race to keep up with demand. Although Rosekind says he is not getting special treatment due to his position, he and his family are fortunate enough to have another vehicle they can drive while waiting for the repair.

The fine was levied by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) against the Italian-American multinational vehicle manufacturer as the result of delayed and inefficient handling of nearly two dozen recalls.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) is the world’s seventh largest automaker and is the parent company for a number of globally-recognized brands. In addition to several familiar on American roads, including Dodge, Jeep, and Ram, FCA also maintains brands such as Alfa Romeo, Ferrari, and Maserati. By the company’s own estimates, FCA is engaged in industrial activities in 40 countries, serving customers in about 150 nations.
