Tips for Dealing with the Stress of Divorce

Illinois divorce lawyerIf you are going through a divorce, your life may be stressful. The tension between you and your spouse paired with the financial challenges and changes in your family dynamic can be very difficult. Fortunately, there are several ways you can deal with the stress of divorce and improve your overall quality of life. Here are five tips we recommend for reducing the stress levels of divorce:

1. Exercise Regularly

Although working out may be the last thing on your mind, it can keep your weight in check and boost your mood. Exercise can release endorphins which are chemicals that trigger positive feelings so it is important that you take a yoga class, go for a swim, walk around your neighborhood, and engage in any other physical activity that you enjoy

2. Get Plenty of Sleep

Your stress levels can increase if you are feeling tired during the day. By getting at least seven to eight hours of sleep every evening, you will have more energy and feel more awake. This will allow you to make smarter decisions and improve your creativity and memory.

3. Schedule Time for Yourself

One of the most effective ways to reduce stress levels during a divorce is to schedule some time for yourself. During this time, you can relax and do whatever will make you happy. You may have dinner with a friend, take a warm bubble bath, get a manicure, or do whatever it is that will take your mind away from your divorce and allow you to truly unwind.

4. Surround Yourself with Support

You do not have to go through the divorce process on your own. In fact, doing so can cause even more stress and feelings of helplessness. Therefore, you should constantly surround yourself with supportive friends and family members who have your best interests in mind. It is also a good idea to speak to a therapist or consider joining a support group for individuals going through a divorce.

5. Rediscover Old Hobbies

Think about any hobbies that you enjoyed in the past and consider rediscovering them or trying new ones. Hobbies can distract you from any stress you may be experiencing and give you the opportunity to make new friends and keep yourself busy and entertained.
