Tips for Working While Going Through a Divorce

Illinois divorce lawyerIf you are going through a divorce, you may wonder how it will affect your work life. There are certain tips that can help you be productive at work and ensure that your personal life does not get in the way of your performance. Here are four tips for working while going through a divorce.

1. Avoid Oversharing

When telling your boss and co-workers about your divorce, you should avoid oversharing personal details and explaining why your marriage did not work. Simply let them know how your divorce will impact your job and duties. You can provide them with a list of dates and times that you will have to miss work due to divorce commitments and let them know whether you will need additional help completing your duties.

2. Do Not Use Your Divorce as an Excuse

Regardless of what is going on in your personal life, you should continue to complete your duties to the best of your ability. Your divorce is not an excuse for you to slack off or underperform. If you believe that your divorce is taking a toll on your performance, you should consult your boss to determine whether you can receive some assistance or cut back your hours.

3. Reduce Communication With Your Soon to Be Ex

Nothing can ruin your workday more than a phone call or text from your soon to be ex that you did not want to receive. You should do your best to reduce communication with your soon-to-be-ex while you are at work. If you notice they have tried to contact you, wait until the workday is over to get back to them unless it is an emergency.

4. Focus on Your Health

If you disregard your health, it will be difficult for you to perform well at your job. While you are going through a divorce, be sure to stick to a healthy diet, exercise regularly, and get plenty of rest. This way, you will have energy while at work and reduce your risk of missing days because of an illness.
