What to Bring to a Divorce Consultation

IL divorce lawyerTo ensure a favorable outcome for your divorce case, it is essential to perform some research and find the right divorce attorney to represent you. Prior to hiring legal representation, it is a good idea to go through several divorce consultations. Once you have scheduled your consultations, come prepared to them by bringing the following items:

1. A Question List

During a divorce consultation, your goal should be to determine whether a lawyer is right for you. In order to do this, come up with a list of questions that will help you gain an understanding of each lawyer’s experience, fee structure, and insight on your situation. You can write your questions down in a notebook or in your smartphone.

2. Pay Stubs

At some point in your consultation, finances will likely come up. Since the lawyer may ask you how much money you and your spouse are making, it is wise to bring at least three months of paystubs from both of you. Pay stubs can help the lawyer estimate your spousal support and child support.

3. Tax Returns

Tax returns are especially important if you and your spouse do not always file taxes jointly each year. They can provide the lawyer with a comprehensive look at your financial situation. Since finances play a vital role in divorce, bringing tax returns can give you a better idea of how divorce will impact your financial future.

4. Other Legal Documents

You likely have a number of legal documents related to your marriage and children. Some examples of these legal documents include prenuptial agreements, the birth certificates of your children, documents from previous legal issues that involve your spouse or children, and social security cards and/or passports. Be sure to bring these documents with as well.

5. Incriminating Evidence

If there is incriminating evidence that relates to your divorce, bring it to the consultation. Photographs, videos, social media postings, and anything else that relates to physical or emotional abuse or cheating can help the lawyer predict the outcome of your case.

6. Honesty

It is only natural to want to keep the details of your marriage and home life private, especially if you are facing problems. However, discussing these matters honestly in a confidential consultation is the key to finding the right divorce lawyer.
