How to Tell Children About a Divorce

When a married couple decides to get divorced, their largest concern is usually related to their children. They likely worry about how the end of their marriage will impact their children and hope that their children can adapt to a new lifestyle with minimal issues.

Tell Children Together

It is essential that you and your soon-to-be-ex tell your children about your divorce at the same time. This way, your children will realize that even though you may no longer be married in the future, you are still their parents and will continue to work together to provide them with the best care. Try to use words such as “we” and “our” so that your children realize that none of their parents will leave them.

Inform Children at Home

Do not tell your children about your divorce while you are out to dinner or driving them home from soccer practice. Your children will be able to show their emotions however they wish if they are in an environment they believe is private, safe, and comfortable.

Share Future Arrangements

If you have figured out future arrangements, you should let your children know what they are. Say things like “you will be living with mom in this house and see dad every weekend.” By telling your child about future arrangements early on, you will give them ample time to get used to the idea and ask questions.

Allow Children to Express Themselves

Give them the chance to express themselves and tell them it is okay to be angry, nervous, or any other emotion they are experiencing. Tell your children that you will always love them and be there for them. Also, make it clear that the divorce is not their fault.
