Questions When Considering Divorce

Posted on August 07, 2018 in Family Law

IL divorce lawyerDivorce is a major life decision that can change your life forever. Before initiating the divorce process, you should make sure you are getting divorced for the right reasons. Below is a list of questions you should ask yourself when considering divorce. By answering these questions, you can determine whether or not a divorce makes sense for your particular situation.

1. Do you have feelings for your spouse?

Ask yourself if you have feelings for your spouse. You may find that you still have feelings of love and affection but are simply angry at them for a particular reason. Since you want to avoid making a mistake, it is a good idea to seek couples therapy if there is any love left.

2. Was there a healthy marriage to begin with?

Sometimes, couples get married for the wrong reasons. Be true to yourself and determine whether you ever had a healthy marriage. If you were simply living with your spouse and going through the motions of life without truly being in love with them, a divorce may be the right choice.

3. Have I tried to fix the relationship?

You should realize that no married couple has a perfect life. There are issues in every relationship. However, if you have made an effort to fix your issues and have not seen positive results, you and your spouse may not be meant to be together.

4. Am I safe in my home?

One of the most common reasons couples divorce is because there is physical and/or emotional abuse. If you feel uncomfortable in your home and do not feel safe in your own space, a divorce may be the answer. Someone who puts you in danger physically and emotionally is not someone you should stay with.

5. How will the divorce affect your children?

Although you should not stay with your spouse because of your children, you should think about how a divorce will affect them. Where will they live? How will they behave? Will they be able to live a happy, healthy life if their marriage comes to an end?
