Rules for Introducing a New Partner to Children After Divorce

Posted on September 12, 2018 in Family Law

IL divorce lawyerAfter a divorce, you may enter the dating world and meet someone special. If you have children, you are likely wondering when and how to introduce a new partner to them after a divorce. Since the way you introduce them may impact your future and whether or not your children approve of your partner, it is important to follow these rules.

Time the Introduction Properly

Be careful of when you introduce your children to your new partner. Make sure that you truly know your partner and have had enough time to determine whether your relationship is a short fling or a long-term commitment. If you are confident that your partner will be in your life in the future and your children have adjusted to your divorce and moved passed the anger and sadness stage, you can introduce them to your children.

Choose an Informal Setting

In addition to timing your introduction properly, you should figure out the ideal place for it. It is wise to select an informal setting such as a bowling alley, coffee shop, or museum so that your children can have some fun while meeting your new partner. A formal introduction at a fancy restaurant may overwhelm them.

Offer Reassurance

After a divorce, your children want to feel that they are still loved. When introducing them to a new partner, reassure them that you have plenty of love to give and will continue to make them your top priority. Security and reassurance can help your children understand that your new love interest will not change their relationship with you or their other parent.

Ask Yourself Questions

Prior to introducing your children to a new partner, take the time to really think about your relationship. Ask yourself questions such as is my new partner a good fit for my family? Are they a positive influence? Will they treat my children well? You may have a great connection with someone but realize they are not a good fit for your family.

Encourage Your Children’s Feedback

Your children’s feedback is very valuable. Therefore, encourage them to tell you how they feel about their new partner. Ask them to be open and honest. Understanding their feelings can help you determine the next steps in your relationship.
