Reasons You Should Not Stay Together for the Children

IL divorce lawyerIf you are not getting along with your spouse and believe your marriage is unhealthy, you may be wondering whether you should avoid a divorce and stay married for your children. Contrary to popular belief, staying together for the kids is not a wise move. Let’s take a closer look at some of the reasons staying married for your kids can do more harm than good.

1. Children May Face Resentment

Staying in an unhappy marriage may cause resentment. Your children may feel like they need to take one parent’s side over the other and experience a great deal of stress and anxiety. Even if you attempt to hide your marriage problems, your children will eventually notice the way you interact with your spouse. They may blame themselves for your issues and face guilt, low self-esteem, and resentment.

2. A False of Understanding of How Marriage and Relationships Should Be

The way you interact with your spouse will teach your children about relationships. They will learn what to expect from a partner and how two people should treat one another. If you are in an unhealthy marriage, you will not be able to show your children that relationships are about compassion, respect, and consideration. Instead, you will lead them to believe that it is normal to fight and be unhappy in a relationship.

3. Children Pick Up on Conflict

You may believe that as long as your fighting or abuse is not directed at your children, they will be fine. The truth, however, is that tension between parents can trickle down to children. Even if you do not yell or fight in front of your children, they will likely notice your feelings of unhappiness. Staying in a marriage will force your children to be surrounded by conflict rather than love and happiness.

4. Happy Parents Are Good Parents

It can be difficult to be a good parent and allow your child to live a healthy, happy life if you are unhappy yourself. A divorce may be just what you need to start over and find happiness once again. There is no reason to fake happiness when a divorce can give you the power to truly experience it.
