dupage county divorce lawyerFor many people in Illinois, the holidays will represent the first time that families are gathering after a couple has decided to get a divorce. It is can be awkward and lonely for individuals who have recently separated or divorced. Many people going through a divorce can see numerous complications to their family plans, and it can be difficult for people to know how to handle the situation.

How to Deal With Separation or Divorce Around the Holidays

Going through a divorce and getting ready for the holidays can be stressful. Here are a few tips divorcing individuals can keep in mind to try and improve their situation.

  • Make It About the Kids — Just as there are certain to be plenty of adults at many family get-togethers, there are also sure to be children. Instead of getting caught up in conversations about the divorce, focus more on interacting with the kids.

  • Create New Traditions — People going through a divorce do not have to follow the same family traditions. Take the time to think of fun new outings and activities that can bolster family togetherness.

  • Consider Your Own Needs — A person going through a divorce may have their own holiday wish that they have been hanging on to, and perhaps this year will mark the best time for them to go with that plan. If family have always held a divorcee back, then maybe this year can be their opportunity to do something new.

  • Focusing on Self-Care — People going through a divorce during the holiday can easily lose themselves in bad habits relating to overeating, but this does not have to be a ritual. People should try to use their divorce as more reason to stay in shape.

  • Helping Others — Many people can find various outlets for helping others during the holidays, so it can be a good time of year for charitable donations of one’s time. Being helpful for others at the holidays has a way of improving our own outlooks.
