When is it Time to Consider Divorce?

DuPage County Divorce LawyerFor most married couples in Illinois, there comes at least one moment during their relationship when they wonder whether staying together is the right choice. Some of these couples have problems that can be solved. They push through their challenges and come out on the other side stronger and more committed to each other. For some couples, however, deciding to end their marriage is irrefutably the right choice. An abusive or dishonest spouse, differing core values, or a gradual process of growing apart make getting divorced the most sensible choice.

Many people find themselves at a crossroads, unsure whether the things they dislike about their spouse are sufficient to warrant ending the relationship. If you have not yet made up your mind about divorce, here are some signs that relationship experts say could show that it is time for you and your spouse to go your separate ways.

Signs That It May Be Time to Get Divorced

Although this is not a comprehensive list and each couple’s situation is different, the following may be silent warning signs that your relationship is ending:

  • Your partner is not your partner anymore - If you and your partner avoid each other, have stopped making decisions or plans together, and cannot even muster the energy to fight about important issues, the relationship may already be over.

  • Trust and respect are gone - Trust is essential to a relationship, as is respect; if one spouse has been deceptive enough to destroy the possibility of building back trust, it may be impossible to recover.

  • Your efforts are one-sided - An effective marriage takes effort from both partners. While it is not always possible for spouses to contribute equally, if you are the only person who is still fighting for the relationship to succeed, you cannot make it work alone.

  • You are staying together for the kids - Although children tend to do better with married parents, children of happily divorced parents are better off than kids whose parents stay together despite being miserable.

  • You are fantasizing about life after divorce - Although it is important to realize that divorce is a complex and difficult process, if you still spend more time visualizing your life once the divorce is over, it may be time to file for divorce.

The only person who knows the right decision for you is you. But having the advice of a trusted legal professional can help you navigate the challenges of divorce and make the process clearer and simpler.
